CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A Grade 6 student was rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) on Friday morning, October 16, after allegedly being stabbed in the back by a fellow Grade 6 pupil inside or within the premises of Macabalan Elementary School in Barangay Macabalan.

The victim, identified only by the alias “Dodong” in initial reports, sustained a stab wound to his back and was brought to the hospital for immediate medical treatment. He was reportedly bleeding when a motorcycle was used to transport him to NMMC, where he was taken to the emergency room.
The alleged attacker, also a male Grade 6 student, was subsequently turned over to Police Station 5 in Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City, for further investigation. Personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) office and Macabalan Elementary School Principal Manuel Lincaro Jr. were also at the police station in connection with the incident.
Suspected bullying being investigated
Initial accounts pointed to suspected bullying as a possible motive behind the stabbing. However, authorities have yet to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation, including who allegedly bullied whom and whether bullying had occurred before the incident.
Investigators must determine whether the stabbing resulted from an ongoing dispute, a specific confrontation that morning, or another circumstance. Until these details are verified, the alleged bullying motive should be treated as an initial account rather than an established finding.
Because both the victim and the alleged assailant are minors, their identities and other identifying details must be protected while authorities establish the facts.
School security under scrutiny
Barangay Captain Engr. Saniel Raypon reportedly raised the possibility that the object used in the stabbing may have already been inside the school before the incident.
According to the initial account, two metal detectors had been issued for security screening, but the circumstances surrounding the alleged weapon’s entry or presence on school grounds remain unclear.
It has not yet been established whether the object was brought into the school that morning, had been concealed there earlier, or escaped detection during security checks. Authorities and school officials will need to clarify these questions as part of the investigation.
The incident raises concerns about how potentially dangerous objects are detected and how school security procedures are implemented, particularly in an environment where elementary pupils are expected to be protected from violence.
However, the available information does not establish that the school’s screening procedures failed or that any individual was responsible for the weapon’s alleged presence.
Police and social welfare officials respond
The suspect was placed under police custody for further investigation, while CSWD personnel and school officials attended to matters arising from the incident.
Investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events, determine the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, and identify any witnesses who may help clarify what happened.
The victim’s medical condition beyond the reported stab wound was not immediately available in the initial reports. No further verified information was provided on the type of object used, the exact location of the confrontation, or whether formal complaints had been filed.
A serious safety concern inside an elementary school
The stabbing of one elementary pupil by another highlights the urgent need to address student conflicts, suspected bullying, and the prevention of violence in schools.
Any response must go beyond identifying the student allegedly responsible. It should also establish what happened before the attack, whether warning signs were present, and whether existing school safeguards were adequate to prevent a potentially life-threatening incident.
At the same time, the investigation must distinguish verified facts from allegations and protect the rights and welfare of both children. Appropriate intervention, accountability under applicable laws, and support for the injured pupil are essential as authorities work to determine the circumstances of the case.
As of the initial reports, the investigation remained ongoing, and the alleged bullying motive had not been conclusively established.
