CARAGA, Davao Oriental — The Caraga Municipal Health Center is facing public criticism following allegations of unsanitary conditions, inadequate facilities, and a lack of privacy and dignity in the handling of a deceased patient whose family and friends were grieving his sudden death after a motorcycle accident.

The allegations surfaced in a social media post by a friend of the deceased, who expressed disappointment over what they described as disturbing conditions inside the health center’s emergency room and ward during the final moments of their friend, identified as Joshua Vic Gumobao, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering alumnus of the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC).

As of publication, the Caraga Municipal Health Center has not yet issued an official statement addressing the allegations.

Friend recounts distressing experience

In the social media post, the grieving friend said their group brought their injured companion to the health center following a motorcycle accident. However, what they encountered inside the facility allegedly added to the emotional distress of a family already facing the sudden loss of a loved one.

The friend claimed that Gumobao’s body was left exposed on a bed in the emergency room without a blanket or adequate covering, while the doors remained open, allowing bystanders and other people to see him.

The post stressed that every person, including someone who has died, deserves privacy, respect, and dignity, particularly during the painful moments immediately following death.

The friend also expressed concern over the condition of the ward where the deceased’s grieving mother was reportedly staying as she tried to cope with the loss of her son.

According to the account, the bed had no clean sheets, while used cotton, a syringe cap, and other waste were allegedly found on the bed. The post also described dried blood on the floor and claimed that blood leaking from the deceased patient’s body was left uncleaned.

These allegations have raised concerns about the facility’s sanitation practices, the proper handling and disposal of medical waste, and the protocols observed when caring for patients and managing the bodies of deceased individuals.

Alleged safety hazards and lack of basic supplies

Aside from the reported cleanliness issues, the complainant also raised concerns about the physical condition of the ward.

The room was allegedly hot and lacked air-conditioning, while the only electric fan was reportedly connected to a defective electrical outlet, raising concerns about the safety of patients, relatives, and health personnel.

The friend further claimed that clean drinking water, wipes, and alcohol were not readily available to patients and their accompanying family members.

While acknowledging that local health facilities may operate with limited budgets and resources, the complainant argued that maintaining basic cleanliness, ensuring the safe disposal of medical waste, and protecting the dignity of patients and the deceased should remain fundamental responsibilities.

The post called for improvements in sanitation, facility maintenance, and the implementation of proper health-care protocols to prevent other families from experiencing similar situations.

UIC mourns death of alumnus

Meanwhile, the University of the Immaculate Conception’s College of Engineering and Architecture expressed its condolences to Gumobao’s family, loved ones, and friends through a memorial post.

The university identified Gumobao as an alumnus of its Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program and paid tribute to his time in the academic community.

The institution offered prayers for strength, comfort, and peace for his bereaved family, remembering him as someone whose life had touched members of the university community.

His death has left his family, friends, and former school community mourning his loss.

Health center’s response awaited

The allegations remain based on the account shared by the deceased’s friend on social media and have not been independently verified. The health center has not yet released an official statement, and its explanation regarding the reported conditions and circumstances remains unavailable.

The concerns raised warrant a fair and thorough review by the appropriate municipal health authorities, including an assessment of sanitation procedures, medical waste management, electrical safety, the availability of essential supplies, and protocols for protecting the privacy and dignity of deceased patients.

Any assessment should also give the health center an opportunity to respond to the allegations and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

For a community facility expected to provide care during medical emergencies, maintaining a clean and safe environment and treating patients and their families with compassion are essential to public trust.

The incident underscores the importance of ensuring that families facing the loss of a loved one are not subjected to additional distress because of preventable shortcomings in health-care services.
