MATI CITY, Davao Oriental — A man identified by authorities as a high-value individual (HVI) in the illegal drug trade was arrested during a buy-bust operation in Barangay Matiao, Mati City, on the evening of October 1, 2026, resulting in the confiscation of suspected shabu valued at approximately ₱226,228.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Marvin,” was arrested at around 6:45 p.m. in Purok Happy Valley during an operation conducted by personnel of the Mati City Police Station, led by Deputy Chief of Police PCpt. Ariel A. Ismael, under the supervision of Chief of Police PLtCol. Frederick C. Sa-ao, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies.

Police said the suspect was apprehended during the operation, with authorities recovering suspected illegal drugs from his possession. The seized substance was estimated to have a street value of more than ₱226,000.

Marvin is facing charges for alleged violations of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, as amended.

Suspect also linked to alleged theft incidents

In a separate statement, Sa-ao confirmed that the newly arrested suspect was also allegedly involved in several theft incidents in Mati City, particularly cases involving stolen water meters.

Speaking with the Radyo Birada team, the police chief said the city remained generally peaceful, while police personnel continued implementing maximum police visibility measures to maintain public safety and order.

The reported links to theft incidents, however, remain allegations and are subject to investigation and the appropriate legal proceedings.

Police vow to sustain anti-drug operations

The Mati City Police Station said it would continue its campaign against illegal drugs in coordination with other law enforcement agencies and the community, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and security.

The arrest comes amid the police station’s continuing efforts to address illegal drug activity and other reported crimes within its area of responsibility.

Authorities have yet to provide further details about the suspect’s identity, the exact quantity of suspected shabu seized, and the status of the case beyond the reported charges.
