COTABATO CITY — Police are investigating a shooting incident near a mosque in Barangay Rosary Heights 10, Cotabato City, on Sunday afternoon, September 13, after an armed man allegedly opened fire at a group of individuals reportedly supporting the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP).
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m., just a day before the first regular Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections, prompting heightened security concerns in the city.
According to PNP PRO-BAR spokesperson Capt. Steffi Salanguit, a black Toyota Grandia reportedly passed through the area and stopped near a group of individuals in front of a mosque. An armed man allegedly emerged from or fired from the vehicle before the suspects quickly fled the area.
Initial information indicated that the firearm used may have been a 5.56-type weapon, although authorities were still verifying the specific firearm and other circumstances surrounding the incident.
Salanguit confirmed that some of those who were reportedly fired upon were identified as alleged supporters of the UBJP.
“As of now, wala naman pong reported na tinamaan or nasugatan,” Salanguit said, confirming that authorities had received no report of anyone being hit or injured in the shooting.
No fatality was likewise reported.
The shooting took place in Rosary Heights 10, an area located behind Cotabato City Hall, adding to concerns over security in the city as authorities intensify preparations for the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections.
Police are now working to establish the identities of the individuals involved, including the driver and other possible companions aboard the black van. Investigators are also examining available information and evidence to determine the exact type of firearm used and establish the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the incident, and no conclusion has been made linking the shooting to any particular political group beyond the preliminary information regarding the alleged identities or affiliations of those who were reportedly targeted.
The Cotabato City Police Office continues to conduct verification and investigation while police forces remain on heightened alert to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents.
The shooting comes amid intensified security measures across the Bangsamoro region ahead of the September 14, 2026 Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections, with authorities closely monitoring areas considered vulnerable to election-related violence and other security threats.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to authorities as security operations continue.
