DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Two individuals who were reported missing at sea were successfully located and rescued by the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM), through Coast Guard Station Davao (CGS Davao), after they became stranded aboard a motor banca due to engine trouble while traversing the waters between Davao City and Samal Island.
The two were safely recovered at approximately 10:01 a.m. on August 31, 2026, in the vicinity of Barangay 37-D, Davao City, following a maritime search and response operation initiated after authorities received information that the individuals were missing at sea.
According to one of the rescued individuals, they were aboard a motor banca on August 30 when the vessel encountered mechanical problems while traveling between Agdao, Davao City, and Samal Island.
The engine trouble rendered the banca unable to continue its journey, leaving the two individuals stranded at sea. With the vessel unable to proceed under its own power, they remained in the waters and drifted overnight while awaiting assistance.
Upon receiving the report, CGDSEM, through CGS Davao, immediately coordinated response efforts to locate the missing individuals and ensure their safe recovery.
The search and response efforts eventually led Coast Guard personnel to the two individuals the following morning. They were brought to the CGS Davao station for proper assessment, documentation, and verification of their condition.
Authorities confirmed that both individuals were in safe and good condition following the rescue. They were subsequently turned over to their respective families.
The incident highlights the potential dangers faced by small watercraft operators and passengers when mechanical problems occur while navigating coastal waters. Engine failure can quickly leave a vessel without propulsion, particularly when the occupants are unable to reach the shoreline or summon immediate assistance.
