ZAMBOANGA CITY — An abandoned cargo truck reportedly loaded with cartons of assorted cigarettes believed to be smuggled was discovered along the highway in Sitio Sero Alto, Barangay Bolong, east of Zamboanga City, during an early-morning inspection by police authorities.
The vehicle was found abandoned along the roadside before dawn, prompting personnel of the Sangali Police Station 3 to conduct an inspection of its cargo.
Police operatives led by PCapt. Paul Ramayrat, together with Barangay Kagawad Ronie Rossete and barangay tanods, discovered cartons of assorted cigarette products inside the abandoned truck.
Authorities described the shipment as suspected smuggled cigarettes, although the exact quantity, brands, and total market value of the seized goods had yet to be officially determined at the time of the initial report.
The discovery raised concerns over the possible use of abandoned or unattended vehicles to transport contraband through road networks in eastern Zamboanga City.
Following the discovery, the Sangali Police Station 3 immediately coordinated with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for the proper turnover, inventory, assessment, and disposition of the recovered cigarette products.
The Bureau of Customs is expected to determine whether the shipment violated customs and other applicable laws, including regulations governing the importation, transport, and distribution of tobacco products.
Police authorities are also expected to establish the ownership of the vehicle and determine who was responsible for transporting the cigarette shipment. As of the initial report, no suspect had been identified or arrested in connection with the discovery.
The abandonment of the truck also leaves authorities with questions about when and why the vehicle was left along the highway, as well as whether its occupants fled after realizing that the shipment could attract law-enforcement attention.
The recovery underscores the continuing efforts of police and customs authorities to intercept suspected smuggled goods entering or being transported through Zamboanga City, a major gateway for the movement of commercial commodities in western Mindanao.
