ZAMBOANGA CITY — Five individuals were arrested after authorities intercepted a convoy allegedly transporting large quantities of suspected smuggled cigarettes in Barangay Curuan, Zamboanga City, in an early-morning operation.
Authorities seized 90 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes with an estimated street value of approximately ₱3.15 million, according to the initial information provided by law enforcement.
The operation involved personnel from the Regional Intelligence Division 9 (RID-9), together with members of Zamboanga City Police Station 2 – Curuan and the City Intelligence Unit (CIU) in Barangay Curuan.
The suspects were reportedly intercepted while transporting the cigarette shipments using three vehicles—a Kia truck, a Suzuki minivan, and a tricycle. The three vehicles were also recovered by the authorities and are now part of the evidence in the case.
Initial reports described the vehicles as being loaded with suspected smuggled cigarettes when they were stopped by the operating team.
The seizure represents another significant enforcement action against the movement of illicit tobacco products in Zamboanga City, where authorities have continued to monitor the transportation and distribution of untaxed or illegally imported cigarettes.
The estimated value of the confiscated cigarettes was placed at around ₱3.15 million, although the final valuation and classification of the seized products will depend on the inventory, verification and assessment by the appropriate authorities.
The five arrested individuals are expected to face the appropriate charges in connection with the alleged possession, transportation and distribution of smuggled tobacco products, subject to the findings of the investigation and the determination of prosecutors and the courts.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the five suspects or provided further details regarding the source and intended destination of the cigarette shipment.
The operation also highlights the role of intelligence-driven enforcement in intercepting suspected smuggling activities before the illicit products can reach wider distribution networks.
The seized cigarettes and vehicles were placed under government custody for documentation, examination and further legal proceedings.
