MAIMBUNG, Sulu — Police personnel recovered an estimated ₱573,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes abandoned along the shoreline of Barangay Bualo Lipid in Maimbung, Sulu, on October 15, 2026, as authorities continued efforts to curb the illegal entry and distribution of tobacco products in the province.

The recovery was carried out by personnel of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 9B (RMFB 9B), led by PCPT Harris A. Ladja under the direct supervision of PLTCOL Sabri J. Lakibul, Force Commander, in coordination with the Maimbung Municipal Police Station (MPS), which served as the lead unit in the operation.

Authorities discovered the abandoned shipment of suspected smuggled Astro Full Flavor cigarettes along the coastal area of Barangay Bualo Lipid. The recovered tobacco products were valued at ₱573,000 based on the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Standard Price Index.

The circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the cigarettes, including the identity of those responsible for transporting or leaving the shipment at the site, were not specified in the initial report.

The recovery underscores the continuing efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to detect and prevent smuggling activities, particularly in coastal communities that may be used as entry or transfer points for illegally traded goods.

Sulu’s coastal geography makes maritime monitoring and coordination among law enforcement units important in addressing suspected smuggling operations. Recoveries such as this also highlight the role of local police stations and mobile force units in responding to potential violations of customs and trade regulations.

Authorities have yet to provide further details on whether suspects have been identified or whether a follow-up investigation has established the origin and intended destination of the cigarettes.

The PNP reiterated its commitment to combating smuggling and strengthening public safety in Sulu through continued law enforcement operations and coordination among police units.

The recovered cigarettes remain classified as suspected smuggled goods based on the information released by authorities. Further investigation would be needed to establish the circumstances of the shipment and determine any legal responsibility.
