CARMEN, Cotabato Province — A barangay captain was shot and killed in an attack in Barangay Kibudtungan, Carmen, on Sunday morning, August 2, 2026, in an incident that has prompted authorities to launch an investigation into the killing.


The victim was identified as Arnel “Boyet” Aliudin, the incumbent barangay captain of Barangay Cadiis, Carmen, Cotabato.
Initial reports indicated that Aliudin was attacked in front of a school in Barangay Kibudtungan. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identity of the assailant or the motive behind the attack, have yet to be established as of this writing.
Following the shooting, the wounded village chief was immediately rushed to the Carmen Municipal Hospital for emergency treatment. However, attending physicians declared him Dead on Arrival (DOA).
News of Aliudin’s death quickly spread across the municipality, with fellow local officials and residents expressing grief over the tragic loss.
Among those who paid tribute was Barangay Captain Lebpas Tuael, who shared a message of condolence on social media.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. Kinauna una nengka Bu Bapa Kapitan Boyet Aliudin.”
The Arabic phrase is commonly recited by Muslims upon hearing of a death, expressing submission to the will of Allah and offering prayers for the deceased.
Aliudin’s killing adds to the growing concern over violent attacks targeting local government officials, particularly barangay leaders who play a crucial role in maintaining peace, order, and community governance.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the suspects or possible motives. Police investigators are expected to conduct follow-up operations, gather witness statements, and review available evidence to identify those responsible for the attack.
Officials have appealed to anyone with information that could help in the investigation to coordinate with the Carmen Municipal Police Station.
