BUTUAN CITY – The body of a two-year-old boy who had been missing for seven days was discovered in a grassy area in Barangay Camayahan, Butuan City, on Wednesday morning, bringing a tragic end to an intensive search operation and prompting authorities to investigate the possibility of foul play.
The victim was identified as Ian Miñoza, a resident of Barangay Camayahan, who was reported missing nearly a week ago. His disappearance had drawn widespread attention from the local community, volunteers, media organizations, and authorities, as search efforts continued day and night in the hope of finding him alive.
According to initial reports, the child’s body was found at around 10:30 a.m. on July 29 in a remote portion of the village. The landowner reportedly discovered the remains while heading to harvest banana sap and immediately alerted authorities.
Police who responded to the scene said the body was already in an advanced state of decomposition. The child’s mother later confirmed the victim’s identity based on the clothes he was wearing—a red sleeveless shirt, an anime-designed jumper, and dotted shorts.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the child’s face had significantly decomposed, while portions of the head were already skeletal due to the condition of the remains.
Police Looking Into Possible Foul Play
Authorities said they are treating the incident with utmost seriousness and have not ruled out the possibility of foul play.

Before the child’s body was found, the Butuan City Police Station 4 disclosed that investigators encountered difficulties during the investigation due to the limited cooperation they allegedly received from the child’s family.
According to the station chief, officers observed that whenever investigators visited the family’s residence to conduct follow-up inquiries, the child’s mother reportedly declined to speak with them. However, police claimed she would appear whenever members of the media or other visitors arrived in the area.
Authorities have not disclosed whether this circumstance has any direct connection to the ongoing investigation but said they remain focused on gathering all relevant information surrounding the case.
Superstitions Spread During Search
As the search continued in previous days, rumors and superstitious beliefs circulated throughout the community.
Reports indicated that two local faith healers, or albularyos, performed rituals near a large tree, believing that supernatural beings such as a kapre or engkanto had taken the child and intended to make him a prince in their mythical kingdom.
However, local officials strongly rejected these claims, emphasizing that there is no evidence supporting such stories. They also dismissed other rumors circulating on social media, including claims that the child had been found alive or was staying with relatives, describing them as false information.
Authorities urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified reports that could hamper the investigation and cause additional distress to the victim’s family.

Police are now conducting a comprehensive investigation to establish the exact cause of Ian Miñoza’s death and determine whether criminal liability is involved.
Forensic examinations and the collection of physical evidence are ongoing, while investigators continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing all possible leads.
