IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – A father’s simple act of providing food for his family ended in heartbreak after he and his son drowned while fishing along the coastal waters of Purok Katipunan, Barangay Magdaup, Ipil, on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The tragedy claimed the lives of Wilmer Villavito Templado, 45, and his 18-year-old son, Wilbert Espacio Templado, both residents of Kitabog, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay. A third companion, Eric Espacio Villavito, 40, survived the incident.
According to the Ipil Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO), an emergency call was received at approximately 12:22 p.m. reporting that three individuals had been involved in a drowning incident while fishing in the coastal waters of Sitio Katipunan, Barangay Magdaup.
LDRRMO responders immediately rushed to the scene, where local residents had already managed to recover one of the victims from the water. However, the victim was found unconscious and showing no signs of life, while another remained missing beneath the water, prompting authorities to launch an intensive search and retrieval operation.
As rescuers searched for the missing victim, emergency personnel simultaneously performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the unconscious fisherman in a desperate attempt to revive him. Despite prolonged life-saving efforts, he could not be resuscitated.
Minutes later, search teams successfully located and retrieved the second victim from the water. Unfortunately, he too was declared dead despite immediate rescue efforts.
The retrieval operation was jointly conducted by personnel from the Ipil Municipal Fire Station, led by Fire Senior Inspector Atty. Herman I. Ting, Municipal Fire Marshal, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, Ipil LDRRMO, and the Ipil Municipal Police Station.
Responding firefighters reported that upon their arrival, one victim had already been recovered and was lying on the shore, while the second victim was retrieved from the sea shortly afterward.
Both fatalities were later pronounced dead by attending physician Dr. Elbert Montralez.
Authorities said the three men had gone fishing in the calm waters in search of food for their family when the incident occurred. What began as a routine fishing trip tragically ended in the loss of two lives.
Following the retrieval operation, the bodies of the victims were turned over to the Philippine National Police Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) for documentation and further investigation.
The exact circumstances that led to the drowning remain under investigation.
Ipil LDRRMO Chief Raymond Hinggo extended his condolences to the bereaved family and reminded the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging in fishing, swimming, or other activities in coastal waters.
He warned that even seemingly calm seas can conceal dangerous conditions, including sudden drop-offs, strong undercurrents, and other hazards that may quickly turn a routine outing into a fatal incident.
The heartbreaking deaths of the father and son have left their family and community grieving, underscoring the harsh reality that many families continue to risk their lives simply to put food on the table. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause of the tragedy while urging the public to prioritize safety during all coastal and maritime activities.
