ZAMBOANGA CITY – A man who was initially rushed to the hospital after being shot by unidentified riding-in-tandem assailants on Friday morning, July 17, has succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed.

The victim was identified as Mohammad-Dail Ismael II Arenal, also referred to in police reports as Ismael Mohammad Dail Arenal, a resident of Don Navarro, Barangay San Jose, Zamboanga City.

The fatal shooting occurred at around 9:00 a.m. along 20th Street, Herrera Phase 1, Barangay Zambowood (Zone 9).

According to initial reports, Arenal was driving his Toyota Hi-Lux when he allegedly became involved in an altercation with the suspects moments before the attack. The unidentified assailants, believed to be riding a motorcycle, suddenly opened fire, hitting the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Responders immediately rushed Arenal to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, despite efforts by medical personnel to save him, he later died from his gunshot wounds.

Investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the killing. Authorities are also working to identify the gunmen and establish whether the attack was premeditated or triggered by the reported confrontation prior to the shooting.

Police are conducting a continuing investigation, including the review of available CCTV footage, collection of witness statements, and forensic examination of evidence to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The victim’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and acquaintances on social media. One of his friends described Arenal as a hardworking businessman who was pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a professional pilot.

“He was just running his business while waiting to be hired by a company so he could formally work as a pilot,” the friend wrote in a heartfelt tribute, recalling Arenal’s kindness and generosity.

The killing has renewed concerns over the continuing incidents of riding-in-tandem attacks in Zamboanga City. Authorities have assured the public that all available leads are being pursued to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that may aid the investigation to coordinate with the nearest police station. As of this writing, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
