DUMALINAO, Zamboanga del Sur — Barely a day after a Police Corporal was gunned down in what investigators initially believed to be a robbery-related ambush, authorities scored a major breakthrough after a Police Staff Sergeant voluntarily surrendered and admitted his alleged participation in the crime, leading to the arrest of the suspected gunman and the recovery of the victim’s service firearm.

The Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office (ZSPPO) announced that the developments came less than 24 hours after the fatal shooting of Police Corporal Armejo Jornadal, a member of the 2nd Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC), who was attacked on the afternoon of July 1, 2026, along Purok Lapu-Lapu in Barangay Tickwas, Dumalinao.
The breakthrough was the result of what police described as an intensive investigation involving extensive CCTV backtracking, intelligence gathering, forensic processing, witness interviews, and sustained hot pursuit operations conducted jointly by police intelligence, investigative, and operational units.
Police officer identified as alleged getaway driver
According to ZSPPO, investigators gathered circumstantial and corroborative evidence pointing to the possible involvement of a Police Staff Sergeant assigned to the Margosatubig Municipal Police Station.
As police operations intensified, the officer voluntarily appeared at the Margosatubig Municipal Police Station at approximately 10:50 a.m. on July 2 and surrendered himself to authorities.
During his voluntary statement, the police officer allegedly admitted that he served as the driver of the motorcycle used during the commission of the crime.
He also identified his alleged cohort as the individual who allegedly shot Jornadal using the victim’s own PNP-issued service firearm after the attack.
Authorities said the surrendering officer also voluntarily turned over his issued service firearm as well as the motorcycle allegedly used during the incident. Both items were immediately placed under police custody for forensic examination and evidentiary processing.
After being informed of his constitutional rights in a language he understood, the suspect was placed under police custody.
Alleged gunman arrested hours later
Acting on the information provided by the surrendering suspect, combined police operating units immediately launched a focused hot pursuit operation.
At around 6 p.m. on July 2, authorities arrested the alleged gunman at his residence in Barangay Poblacion, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.
Police said they recovered from the suspect’s possession the victim’s PNP-issued CANIK 9mm service pistol, which investigators believe was taken from Jornadal during or immediately after the fatal attack.
The arrested suspect was likewise informed of his constitutional rights before being taken into police custody.
Both suspects, along with the recovered firearm and other pieces of evidence, were turned over to the Dumalinao Municipal Police Station for proper disposition and the filing of appropriate criminal charges.
Robbery angle remains significant
The arrests provide a dramatic development in the investigation that initially centered on a suspected robbery-homicide.
Based on the earlier police investigation, Jornadal had just completed a loan transaction in Dumalinao on the afternoon of July 1 and was traveling back toward Guipos aboard his motorcycle when he was allegedly tailed by two men riding another motorcycle.
Upon reaching Purok Lapu-Lapu in Barangay Tickwas, the motorcycle-riding suspects reportedly pulled alongside the victim before the back rider opened fire multiple times, fatally wounding the police officer.
Investigators earlier disclosed that the assailants allegedly fled with Jornadal’s bag, which was believed to contain cash obtained from the loan transaction.
The attack also resulted in the loss of the victim’s issued service firearm, which has now been recovered following the arrest of the alleged gunman.
Crime scene investigators had earlier recovered four spent bullet casings from the scene, which were submitted for ballistic examination as part of the ongoing forensic investigation.
Police commend coordinated operations
The Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office commended the coordinated efforts of its investigative, intelligence, forensic, and operational units, saying the swift identification of the suspects underscored the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and close inter-unit collaboration.
Authorities emphasized that the rapid surrender of one suspect, the arrest of the alleged shooter, and the recovery of critical evidence demonstrate the Philippine National Police’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible for violent crimes are brought before the courts.
While the arrests mark a significant breakthrough, investigators continue to build the case as prosecutors prepare the appropriate criminal charges against both suspects. Police have yet to publicly disclose the possible motive behind the killing, although the robbery angle remains a key focus of the investigation.
