ALABEL, Sarangani Province — Authorities intercepted more than P400,000 worth of suspected illegal cigarettes during a routine police checkpoint operation in Barangay Maribulan, Alabel, Sarangani Province, on Thursday afternoon, July 2, as part of the government’s intensified campaign against the smuggling and distribution of untaxed tobacco products.

According to police reports, the operation took place shortly after 2:00 p.m. when law enforcement personnel flagged down a Toyota Raize bearing plate number VX 922B that was passing through the established checkpoint.
During the inspection, officers discovered 10 cartons of Berlin-brand cigarettes concealed inside the vehicle. Initial estimates placed the value of the confiscated contraband at more than P400,000.
The vehicle, along with the seized cigarettes, was immediately taken into police custody for documentation and further investigation.
Authorities have yet to determine the origin of the cigarettes and their intended destination. Investigators are also looking into whether the shipment was part of a larger network involved in the transport and distribution of smuggled or untaxed tobacco products operating in the region.
Police are likewise conducting a background investigation on the occupants of the vehicle to establish their possible liability and determine whether criminal charges for violations of customs, tax, and other applicable laws will be filed.
The seizure highlights the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to tighten border and highway security through regular checkpoint operations aimed at curbing the movement of illegal goods.
Smuggled cigarettes continue to pose a significant challenge to authorities, depriving the government of millions of pesos in tax revenues while undermining legitimate businesses and facilitating the proliferation of unregulated tobacco products in the market.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify the source of the contraband and determine if other individuals or groups were involved in the attempted transport of the illegal shipment.
