A woman in M’lang, North Cotabato, was left in tears after allegedly falling victim to a “budol-budol” scam, surrendering her jewelry and cash in exchange for what she believed was a bundle containing ₱20,000, only to discover that it was filled with paper.
The incident occurred in Poblacion, M’lang, where the victim was reportedly approached by individuals believed to be members of a budol-budol syndicate. According to initial reports, the suspects successfully deceived the woman into handing over her valuables before fleeing the scene.
A social media post by Emy Malinao recounted the victim’s ordeal, claiming that the woman appeared to have been “hypnotized” or psychologically manipulated by the suspects during the encounter. The alleged scammers convinced the victim to exchange her necklace, wristwatch, and ₱2,000 in cash for what they claimed was a bundle containing ₱20,000.
Believing the offer to be genuine, the woman surrendered her belongings. However, after the suspects had already disappeared, she inspected the bundle and discovered that only three ₱100 bills were authentic, while the remaining contents were merely pieces of paper cut to resemble money.
Realizing she had been deceived, the victim reportedly broke down in tears after losing both her cash and valuable jewelry.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the suspects and recover the stolen valuables. Police are currently gathering evidence and reviewing available information to determine the identities and whereabouts of those responsible for the scam.
The incident highlights the continuing threat posed by budol-budol syndicates, which often target unsuspecting individuals through deception, psychological manipulation, distraction techniques, and false promises of easy money or lucrative exchanges.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded the public to remain vigilant and avoid trusting strangers who suddenly offer cash, investment opportunities, or suspicious transactions. Authorities also urged residents to immediately report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station to help prevent similar incidents.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police expected to release additional information as efforts continue to locate and apprehend the suspects.
