DAVAO CITY — A tragic weather-related incident claimed the life of a minor boy after he was struck by a falling Ipil-Ipil tree in a remote community in Marilog District on Saturday, June 13, authorities reported.

The fatal incident occurred in Sitio Kawayan, Lower B, Barangay Tamugan, where continuous heavy rains and strong winds had been battering the area.
According to the police, the Marilog Police Station received a report from the Barangay Tamugan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) at approximately 12:20 p.m. regarding a child who had been pinned beneath a fallen tree.
Upon receiving the report, authorities immediately proceeded to the area. However, responders learned that personnel from the BDRRMC had already managed to retrieve the victim from under the massive Ipil-Ipil tree before the police arrived at the scene.
Initial investigations revealed that the boy was near their residence together with his sibling when the large tree suddenly collapsed. Authorities believe the tree may have been weakened by the prolonged rainfall and strong winds affecting the community at the time of the incident.
The impact of the falling tree caused severe injuries to the child. Emergency responders declared the victim dead at the scene due to the extent of the injuries he sustained.
Following standard procedures, the victim’s remains were transported to Angel Funeral Home in Calinan, Davao City.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions, particularly in upland and rural communities where large trees and unstable terrain can become hazardous during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds.
Authorities have reminded residents to remain vigilant during adverse weather conditions and to avoid staying near large trees, especially when strong winds and heavy rains are occurring. Local disaster response officials continue to monitor weather conditions in vulnerable areas to prevent similar tragedies.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
