TABUAN LASA, Basilan — Authorities have launched an investigation after a headless and mutilated body was discovered floating in the waters off Barangay Lanawan in the municipality of Tabuan Lasa, Basilan, on Monday afternoon.
According to initial reports, local residents and fishermen spotted the remains drifting at sea and immediately alerted law enforcement authorities and coast guard personnel assigned in the area.
Responding authorities rushed to the scene and recovered the body, which was already in an advanced state of decomposition. Investigators said the remains were missing the head and both feet, making identification difficult. A pair of pants was reportedly the only clothing still attached to the body.
The gruesome discovery shocked residents of the coastal community, prompting concerns over the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
Authorities transported the cadaver to a designated facility for proper documentation, forensic examination, and possible autopsy. As of press time, the identity of the victim has yet to be established.
Police investigators are now working to determine how long the body had been in the water and whether the victim was killed elsewhere before the remains drifted into the waters off Barangay Lanawan. The possibility of foul play is also being explored as part of the ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement agencies have begun coordinating with nearby coastal communities, local government units, and other concerned agencies to gather information that could help identify the victim and trace the origin of the remains.
Officials have also appealed to the public for assistance, particularly anyone who may have knowledge of missing persons or information that could aid investigators in establishing the victim’s identity.
“No definitive conclusions can be made at this stage as the investigation remains ongoing,” authorities said, emphasizing that all possible angles are being examined.
The discovery marks a disturbing incident in the municipality, with residents awaiting answers as authorities continue their efforts to uncover the circumstances behind the victim’s death and the identity of the person whose remains were found floating in Basilan waters.
