VALENCIA CITY, Bukidnon — What began as a humble online plea from a father struggling to provide for his children has blossomed into a wave of compassion that touched the hearts of thousands across social media.

Ronald Demapelis, a person with disability (PWD) who has been making and selling cleaning rags for the past six years, never expected his simple Facebook post to go viral. With the opening of classes on June 8 fast approaching, Demapelis turned to the internet with a heartfelt request: exchange old notebooks, paper, and school supplies for the rags he painstakingly makes to support his family.

Through his Facebook page “Ronald RAG,” Demapelis shared his appeal in Cebuano, humbly asking people if they could barter used notebooks, paper, or school materials in exchange for his handmade rags.

“Baylo notbok or papel sa among rag… pwede ra baylo sa mga gamit sa skwelahan… amoa gyud ne gibanatan para naa sila pangpalit gamit,” he wrote.

The post quickly resonated with netizens, earning more than 26,000 reactions since it was uploaded on May 30. Beyond the likes and shares, however, came something far more meaningful — kindness from strangers.

Demapelis revealed that after his post spread online, many people reached out to offer school supplies, donations, and financial assistance for his three children who are set to return to school. Some netizens even asked for his personal details and GCash account so they could extend monetary support directly to the family.

For Demapelis, every notebook, every pad of paper, and every peso donated carries immense meaning. Like many parents, he dreams of giving his children the opportunity to continue their education despite life’s hardships.

Making and selling rags has long been their family’s source of income, but earnings are often uncertain. There are days when only a few pieces are sold, making it difficult to provide for daily needs, much less prepare school requirements for three children.

Still, Demapelis continues to work tirelessly, while his wife stays home to care for their children.

Behind the viral post is the quiet determination of a father refusing to give up.

His story has become a reminder that amid economic struggles and everyday challenges, simple acts of compassion can create extraordinary impact. For many online users, Demapelis’ sincerity and perseverance reflected the sacrifices countless Filipino parents endure just to keep their children in school.

Overwhelmed by the support, Demapelis expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who extended help and encouragement to his family.

He also hopes the blessings will continue to come, not only to sustain his children’s schooling this year, but also to inspire others facing similar struggles to never lose hope.

In a world often filled with divisive headlines and negativity, the story of Ronald Demapelis stands as proof that kindness still thrives — one notebook, one rag, and one helping hand at a time.
