Parang, Maguindanao del Norte – A coordinated intelligence-driven anti-criminality checkpoint led to the interception of an estimated Php20.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes early Friday morning, authorities reported. The operation took place at approximately 6:30 AM on March 20, 2026, at the Pinantao Detachment, Brgy. Pinantao, Parang.

The operation was spearheaded by personnel from the 2nd Maneuver Platoon, 1401st Maneuver Company, RMFB14-A, in close coordination with the Parang Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Customs Sub-port of Parang, the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) PRO BAR, Regional Intelligence Unit 15, and the Provincial Intelligence Unit of Maguindanao del Norte PPO.

Intelligence Leads to High-Value Interception

Initial investigations revealed that the checkpoint was established following verified intelligence reports indicating the transport of smuggled cigarettes from Lanao del Sur. Authorities were able to act swiftly on this intelligence, stopping the vehicle after it failed to comply with standard checkpoint procedures.

The driver, Junrey R. Gako, 42, a resident of Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, was immediately apprehended for violation of Article 151 (Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority) of the Revised Penal Code.

Massive Contraband Seized

Seized during the operation was an orange and silver Fuso wing van loaded with 345 master cases (17,250 reams) of assorted suspected smuggled cigarettes, with a total estimated value of Php20,182,500.00, as determined by the National Tobacco Administration.

The scale of the seizure underscores ongoing smuggling challenges in the region and highlights the role of intelligence-driven operations in intercepting high-value contraband before it reaches the market.

Authorities Commend Coordinated Effort

PBGEN Jaysen C. De Guzman, Regional Director of PRO BAR, lauded the operating units for their swift and effective action. “This successful operation demonstrates the importance of inter-agency coordination and intelligence-led enforcement in our continued fight against smuggling and other illegal activities in the Bangsamoro region,” he said.

Director De Guzman further emphasized that intensified checkpoint operations would continue to safeguard the region from illicit trade, maintaining vigilance against criminal syndicates that attempt to exploit transportation routes across Mindanao.

Authorities confirmed that the driver is now in custody and facing legal proceedings, while the seized contraband has been turned over to proper authorities for documentation and disposition.
