TALITAY, Maguindanao del Norte — Government troops seized five high-powered firearms along with ammunition and other war materiel after armed men fled during a combat patrol operation in Barangay Gadungan on the afternoon of March 20, 2026.

The operation, conducted around 2:00 p.m. by elements of the 1st Mechanized Infantry (Lakan) Battalion, was part of intensified security measures in anticipation of the culmination of Ramadan. The unit was led by Lt. Col. William Sabado, its commanding officer.
Military officials said the patrol was launched following reports from residents about the presence of armed individuals in the area, which had caused alarm within the community.
Upon arrival at the target location, the troops encountered suspected armed group members who immediately dispersed and fled in different directions. Soldiers initiated a pursuit operation but were unable to apprehend the suspects.
However, clearing operations in the area led to the discovery and seizure of firearms and equipment believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing group.
Recovered from the site were one 5.56mm M16A1 rifle (Elisco), one 7.62mm M14 rifle, two 5.56mm M653 carbines (Elisco), and one 40mm M79 grenade launcher. Troops also confiscated 21 magazines and three 40mm rifle grenades.
Lt. Col. Sabado said the successful recovery was made possible through timely information provided by the community.
“We received reports from residents regarding the presence of an armed group that caused fear among locals. We immediately conducted a combat patrol and tracked the group. Although they managed to escape, they left behind their weapons,” Sabado said.
He emphasized that government forces remain committed to maintaining peace and security, especially during sensitive periods such as the end of Ramadan.
Brig. Gen. Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, underscored the importance of community cooperation in sustaining peace efforts.
“Our soldiers are partners of the people in ensuring peace and order. We will not stop until the safety of every citizen in Talitay and across the BARMM region is secured,” Catu said.
Meanwhile, Major General Jose Vladimir R. Cagara, commander of Joint Task Force Central and the 6th Infantry Division, described the recovery of the firearms as a significant step in preventing potential violence.
“This operation is a major contribution to averting possible armed conflict. We continue to encourage the public to cooperate with authorities to preserve peace and order in their communities,” Cagara said.
He also called on members of armed groups to surrender and return to the fold of the law, assuring them of opportunities to rebuild their lives peacefully with their families.
Authorities said security and clearing operations remain ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and hold them accountable under the law.
