BALINGASAG, Misamis Oriental — Swift police action prevented further harm to a minor after the Philippine National Police (PNP) rescued a 16-year-old girl from online sexual abuse in Balingasag town, underscoring authorities’ intensified campaign against crimes targeting children in the digital space.

On January 19, 2026, operatives of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), through the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 10, successfully rescued the victim, identified only by the alias “Therese,” following a verified report involving online sexual abuse or exploitation of children (OSAEC).

The rescue operation was conducted in close coordination with the Department of Justice–Regional Anti-Trafficking Task Force 10 (DOJ-RACETTF 10) and the Misamis Oriental Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), ensuring the minor’s immediate safety and access to proper care.

Acting Chief of the PNP PLTGEN Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. lauded the swift and coordinated response of the operating units, stressing that the protection of children remains a top priority of the police organization.

“This rescue reminds us that crimes against children often happen quietly and online, but the harm is very real,” Nartatez said. “Hindi natin hahayaan na masira ang kinabukasan ng ating mga kabataan. The PNP will continue to act fast and decisively to protect them and to hold offenders accountable.”

Following the operation, “Therese” was immediately turned over to the MSWDO for psychosocial intervention, assessment, and continued care. Authorities have also launched an in-depth investigation to identify and track down the individuals responsible for the abuse, with the filing of appropriate criminal charges already underway.

The PNP chief also issued a strong warning to perpetrators and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, particularly in monitoring children’s online activities.

“Sa mga magulang at tagapag-alaga, maging mapagmatyag tayo sa online activities ng ating mga anak. Sa mga gumagawa ng ganitong krimen, malinaw ang babala: hahabulin kayo ng batas,” Nartatez stressed. “The internet is not a hiding place for those who exploit children.”

The PNP called on the public to promptly report any suspected cases of online sexual abuse or exploitation of children through official police channels, emphasizing that timely information can mean the difference between prolonged abuse and a life saved.
