Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat — The Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry “Tapat” Battalion (7IB) successfully facilitated the voluntary surrender of assorted loose firearms and high-explosive ordnance in its area of operations on Friday, December 19, 2025, marking a significant step toward strengthening peace and public safety in Central Mindanao.

Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Tristan Rey P. Vallescas and operating under the 603rd Infantry “Persuader” Brigade, the initiative resulted in the voluntary turnover of 11 high-powered firearms, 27 low-powered firearms, and 10 high-explosive ordnance. The military said the development reflects the growing trust and cooperation between local communities and the security sector.

The activity was conducted in line with the Headquarters Philippine Army’s Campaign Against Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and was carried out in close coordination with peace partners, including the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), local government units, and community stakeholders.

According to the Army, continuous information dissemination and sustained community engagements played a crucial role in encouraging individuals to surrender their weapons by highlighting the dangers of loose firearms and the shared responsibility of safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

“This voluntary surrender is more than just turning over firearms—it is a powerful statement of hope and unity,” LTC Vallescas said, noting that the move demonstrates the people’s desire for a future free from fear where development can take root.

Brigadier General Michael A. Santos, commander of the 603rd Infantry Brigade, praised the combined efforts of the 7th Infantry Battalion and its partners for peace, emphasizing that cooperation and compassion are vital to effective peacebuilding.

“True peace is achieved when communities and security forces work hand in hand,” Santos said. “This accomplishment reflects the courage of individuals who chose to surrender their firearms and contribute to a safer and more harmonious society.”

The surrendered firearms and explosive ordnance were formally presented at the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Kapaya, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat, for proper documentation and disposition, the Army said.
