CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte – Seven former members of local terrorist groups have formally returned to the fold of the law, marking their complete renunciation of violence and armed struggle.
According to Lt. Col. Aeron T. Gumabao, Commanding Officer of the 57th Infantry (Masikap) Battalion, the former rebels voluntarily surrendered at the unit’s headquarters in Edwards Camp, Barangay Mirab, Upi, Maguindanao del Norte. They were previously known for their involvement in violent and terror-related activities in the area.
Along with their surrender, the individuals handed over several high-powered weapons, including two 60mm mortars, two M14 rifles, one M79 grenade launcher, one .30 caliber sniper rifle (muzzle type), and one 7.62mm sniper rifle.
The surrenderers were formally presented by Lt. Col. Gumabao to Brigadier General Michael A. Santos, Commander of the 603rd Infantry Brigade, during a ceremony held on June 3, 2025, at the 57IB headquarters. Maguindanao del Norte Governor Sharifudin Tucao Mastura also attended the event.
In his message, Brig. Gen. Santos emphasized the vital role played by local government units and communities in the success of this surrender.
“The reintegration of former extremists would not have been possible without the unwavering support and cooperation of local officials, community leaders, and the people themselves. Their efforts in sharing information and participating in peace initiatives were key in reaching out to those who had gone astray,” Brig. Gen. Santos stated.
Also present during the ceremony were the Mayor of Upi, representatives from the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs (MIPA), members of the BARMM Parliament led by Ramon A. Piang Sr., and the Ministry of Public Order and Safety.
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and the Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), lauded the former rebels’ decision.
“This is a clear indication that terrorism is steadily losing its grip on our communities. I call on those who remain on the wrong path—it is time to lay down your arms and join the government in building peace and development,” said Maj. Gen. Gumiran.
The military and local officials reaffirmed their commitment to assisting the former rebels in reintegrating into society and living peaceful, productive lives.
