Walking with a Purpose: Promoting Health and Environmental Stewardship

ZAMBOANGA CITY — In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, organizers of Trail Plogging 2025 – Year 3 have opened 30 free slots to individuals and groups who want to join a meaningful outdoor activity that combines fitness with environmental action.

The event will follow a 5-kilometer route from the Universidad de Zamboanga Pasonanca Campus to the Savannah Grassland and back. But this is no ordinary trek — it’s “plogging,” a blend of jogging or walking while picking up litter along the way. The initiative aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution and promote responsible waste disposal while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

“Healthy Environment, Healthy Us!” is this year’s call to action. Organizers emphasize that the activity is not just for exercise or sightseeing, but also a way to show direct care for the environment. By physically removing trash from natural spaces, participants contribute to cleaner surroundings and help prevent waste from polluting rivers, harming wildlife, or contributing to climate change.

“This is about being hands-on,” said one of the event volunteers. “You don’t need to be a policymaker to make a difference. Every piece of trash picked up is a small win for the planet.”

Registration is free and open only to the first 30 participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to pre-register before the June 2 deadline through this link: https://forms.gle/ojWYJWgrEP2subxL6.

As World Environment Day draws near, the event serves as a reminder that environmental responsibility starts with simple, doable actions — like plogging.
