LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — September 14, 2026 — Security forces foiled a potential bombing incident after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered in Barangay Balobo, Lamitan City, Basilan, early Monday morning, just hours before polling precincts were scheduled to open for the historic first BARMM Parliamentary Elections.
The suspected explosive was located at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Monday during an intelligence-driven security operation conducted by joint personnel from the Lamitan City Police Station, RID Tracker Team, 52nd Special Action Force (SAF), Police Explosive and Canine Unit (PECU)-Basilan, and the Philippine Army’s 112th Division Reconnaissance Company.
Initial reports said the suspected IED had been left inside a blue plastic bag in the area.
Authorities subsequently secured the site and called in PECU personnel to handle the device. At approximately 3:30 a.m., the suspected IED was subjected to controlled detonation as part of established safety procedures.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the incident.
Authorities recovered several components believed to have formed part of the device, including an electronic blasting cap, TNT reportedly used as the main explosive charge, a keypad-type mobile phone, a 9-volt battery terminal, concrete nails measuring about three inches, a plastic receptacle, and connecting wires.
The recovered materials were turned over for forensic and chemical examination as investigators work to determine the composition and origin of the device and identify those responsible for placing it in the area.
The Lamitan City Police Station is leading the investigation. As of the initial reports, authorities had not identified any suspect or established a motive.
The discovery came at a highly sensitive time for Basilan and the wider Bangsamoro region, as voters prepared to participate in the first BARMM Parliamentary Elections on September 14.
Authorities are investigating whether the suspected IED was connected to the elections, but no such connection has been officially established.
The early discovery and subsequent controlled disposal prevented the device from remaining in the area as election activities were about to begin, although authorities have not publicly determined whether it was intended to target voters, election personnel, security forces, or other individuals.
Security forces have continued heightened monitoring in Lamitan City and other parts of Basilan as election-related security operations remain in effect.
The incident underscores the heightened security environment surrounding the inaugural BARMM parliamentary polls, particularly in areas where authorities remain alert to possible threats of violence and disruption.
Investigators are expected to examine the recovered components, intelligence reports, surveillance information and other available evidence to establish who placed the suspected explosive and why.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious objects or activities to law enforcement, particularly around polling places and other election-related areas.
No casualties were reported, and the suspected IED was safely neutralized before the opening of polling precincts in the city.
