IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — Authorities intensified their campaign against the illegal tobacco trade after seizing more than ₱1.37 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arresting one suspect during a coordinated law enforcement operation in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
The operation was carried out in Purok Gumamela, Barangay Makilas, Ipil, by joint operatives from the Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU) of the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office (ZSBPPO) and the Regional Special Operations Unit 9 (RSOU 9), serving as the lead units. They were assisted by personnel from the Regional Intelligence Division 9 (RID 9), the Ipil Municipal Police Station, and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Pagadian City Office.
Authorities arrested one adult male suspect during the operation and confiscated 24 master cases of Pragon cigarettes, which have an estimated Bureau of Customs standard value of ₱1,375,200.
Police said the seized cigarettes are believed to have been smuggled into the country without the payment of the required customs duties and taxes, depriving the government of significant revenue while undermining legitimate businesses.
Following the operation, the suspect and the confiscated contraband were transported to the Ipil Municipal Police Station for temporary custody. The seized items will subsequently be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition, while appropriate criminal charges are being prepared against the arrested individual in accordance with existing customs and revenue laws.
The successful operation highlights the continuing collaboration between the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Customs in suppressing the entry and distribution of illicit tobacco products in Western Mindanao.
Provincial Director PCOL Barnard Danie V. Dasugo commended the operating units and partner agencies for the accomplishment, stressing that sustained inter-agency coordination remains vital in dismantling smuggling networks operating in the province.
Dasugo emphasized that operations targeting the illegal cigarette trade not only help enforce customs regulations but also safeguard government revenues and protect legitimate businesses from unfair competition posed by untaxed and illegally imported products.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to intensify intelligence-driven operations against smuggling activities and warned individuals involved in the illegal trade that law enforcement agencies will continue to pursue those violating customs and taxation laws.
