IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — A high-impact maritime law enforcement operation before dawn on Thursday resulted in the seizure of ₱8.7 million worth of smuggled cigarettes, marking another significant success in the Philippine National Police’s intensified crackdown on illegal coastal trade.

At around 4:00 a.m. on December 11, 2025, personnel of the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA), together with RIU 9, Zamboanga Sibugay PPO, and CIDG-Sibugay, intercepted a gray motorized banca during a seaborne patrol along the waters of Ipil. Authorities arrested a Filipino male of legal age and recovered 150 master cases of illegal cigarettes valued at ₱8,745,000.00.

The seized goods, believed to have originated from smuggling routes frequently used to bypass law enforcement, constitute violations of RA 10643 (Graphic Health Warnings Law) and RA 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act). Both the contraband and the arrested individual are now under the custody of Zamboanga Sibugay MARPSTA for further investigation.

PNP Acting Chief PLTGEN Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the operating units for the swift and coordinated action, emphasizing the broader implications of the operation.
“This operation shows how illegal trade thrives in the shadows, but our police stand ready to confront it. Ang mahalaga, napigilan natin ang pagpasok ng mga produktong walang kaukulang dokumento at naninindigan tayo para sa kapakanan ng publiko,” he said.

The successful interception further highlights the PNP’s strengthened presence along vulnerable maritime routes—areas often exploited by smuggling networks seeking to avoid regulatory checks. It also underscores the police force’s commitment to the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly the Enhanced Managing Police Operations program, which prioritizes proactive and intelligence-driven actions against illicit activities.

PLTGEN Nartatez reiterated that the PNP will continue intensifying its maritime vigilance.
“We will keep tightening our watch over coastal entry points. Patuloy naming isinusulong ang mga operasyong nagpoprotekta sa ekonomiya at kaligtasan ng ating mga komunidad,” he added.

The confiscation of millions worth of contraband in Ipil stands as a strong message against illegal trade and reinforces ongoing national efforts to secure borders and safeguard communities.
