COLUMBIO, Sultan Kudarat — A drinking session in Sitio Mauno, Barangay Maligaya, turned into a deadly confrontation after a farmer was allegedly hacked to death by his fellow drinker following a heated argument on the night of August 2, 2026.
The victim was identified by the Columbio Municipal Police Station as Antonio Paan, also known as “Anton,” an adult, married farmer and resident of Sitio Mauno. Police identified the suspect as Santos Rasin, also known as “Doy,” 52 years old, likewise a farmer and resident of the same community.
According to the police investigation, the victim and the suspect were drinking together when a heated exchange of words erupted. Investigators said the argument intensified after the victim allegedly uttered insulting remarks against the suspect and his family. Enraged by the confrontation, the suspect allegedly armed himself with a lagaraw, a bladed farm tool, and repeatedly hacked the victim.
The attack left Paan with multiple hack wounds, including severe injuries to his head and back. Residents immediately rushed him to the Columbio Infirmary Hospital for emergency treatment, but he was declared dead on arrival by attending medical personnel.
Following the incident, the suspect did not attempt to flee. Authorities said Rasin voluntarily surrendered to Municipal Kagawad Rudy M. Capion, who later turned him over to the Columbio Municipal Police Station. He is now under police custody at the station’s detention facility while awaiting the filing of appropriate criminal charges.
Police also recovered the bladed weapon believed to have been used in the attack, which has been secured as evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Authorities continue to gather additional evidence and witness statements to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. The Columbio Municipal Police Station is preparing the necessary murder charges against the suspect.
