ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities arrested a 58-year-old utility worker and confiscated high-powered firearms and ammunition during the implementation of a search warrant at his residence in Barangay Lapaz, Zamboanga City, early Thursday morning.

The suspect, identified only by his alias “Rick,” was apprehended in a coordinated law enforcement operation led by the City Intelligence Unit of the Zamboanga City Police Office (CIU-ZCPO), with support from other police and security units.
The operation was conducted at the suspect’s residence in Zone 2, Barangay Lapaz, after authorities secured a search warrant as part of an ongoing effort to curb the proliferation of loose firearms and strengthen public safety in the city.
During the search, operatives recovered an assortment of firearms and ammunition, including one caliber .38 revolver loaded with five live rounds and an AK-47 assault rifle equipped with two magazines and a substantial quantity of ammunition.
Police immediately secured the seized weapons and documented the evidence for proper legal proceedings. Authorities have yet to determine whether the firearms had been used in previous criminal activities, but an investigation is underway to establish the origin of the weapons and the extent of the suspect’s possible involvement in illegal firearm possession and other related offenses.
The confiscation of an AK-47 rifle, a military-style firearm known for its high firepower, raised concerns among law enforcement authorities due to its potential threat to public safety if left in unauthorized hands.
The arrested suspect was taken into police custody and is expected to face charges for violations of the country’s firearms laws, particularly those governing the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police officials emphasized that the successful operation underscores their continuing commitment to intensifying intelligence-driven operations against individuals possessing unlicensed firearms and other illegal weapons.
Authorities also urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities, stressing that public participation plays a vital role in maintaining peace and order.
The Zamboanga City Police Office reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining aggressive law enforcement efforts aimed at removing loose firearms from communities and preventing crimes that could endanger the lives and safety of residents.
