ZAMBOANGA CITY — A routine checkpoint operation turned into a major law enforcement arrest after a motorist was found carrying a firearm, a grenade, a bladed weapon, and suspected illegal drugs in Barangay Sangali, authorities reported.

Operatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) under Police Station 3 initially flagged down the suspect for a simple traffic violation—failing to wear a helmet while driving. However, what began as a minor infraction quickly escalated into a serious case following a thorough inspection.

According to the police report, officers discovered in the suspect’s possession an unlicensed firearm, a hand grenade, a bladed weapon, and substances believed to be illegal drugs. The combination of weapons and contraband raised alarm among authorities, underscoring the importance of routine checkpoints in intercepting potential threats.

The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and transported to the police station for proper documentation, investigation, and the filing of appropriate criminal charges. These include violations of laws on illegal possession of firearms and explosives, as well as drug-related offenses.

Police officials emphasized that the arrest highlights the effectiveness of intensified checkpoint operations across the city. They reiterated their call for motorists to strictly comply with traffic regulations, noting that even minor violations can lead to the discovery of more serious crimes.

The PNP continues to strengthen its visibility and enforcement measures in key areas to ensure public safety and maintain peace and order in Zamboanga City.
