MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — A 56-year-old security guard was found dead inside a locked guardhouse at a Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) depot in Purok 17, Barangay Casisang, Malaybalay City, on Monday morning, June 15, 2026.
The victim, identified only as “Rolly,” a bachelor and resident of Purok 8, Barangay 9, Malaybalay City, was discovered lifeless while still on duty at approximately 6:44 a.m., just minutes before the end of his scheduled 24-hour shift.
According to a report from the Malaybalay City Police Station, authorities received a call from the victim’s fellow security guard who made the grim discovery after repeatedly attempting to get Rolly’s attention without success.
Police officers immediately responded to the scene and found the victim seated on a bench inside the guardhouse, which was locked from the inside. Investigators noted that a nebulizer was still attached to his face when he was found, suggesting he may have been attempting to address a respiratory condition before his death.
Authorities also recovered asthma medications and a container containing the victim’s saliva from inside the guard post, further indicating that he may have been experiencing breathing difficulties during his duty hours.
Initial investigation revealed that Rolly had started his shift at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 14, and was scheduled to complete it at 7:00 a.m. the following day. Concern arose when he failed to respond despite repeated calls from his replacement guard. The colleague reportedly peered through a window and saw the victim motionless inside but could not immediately enter because the door was secured from within.
Crime scene investigators conducted a thorough examination of the area and found no signs of forced entry, struggle, or any evidence suggesting criminal activity. The guardhouse remained locked from the inside, and all indications pointed away from foul play.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident strongly suggest that the security guard may have suffered a medical emergency while on duty. However, authorities emphasized that the exact cause of death has yet to be officially determined pending further investigation and medical examination.
The tragic incident highlights the difficult and often demanding conditions faced by security personnel, many of whom work extended shifts while managing underlying health conditions.
As investigators continue to establish the definitive cause of death, colleagues and residents mourn the sudden passing of the veteran security guard who spent his final hours faithfully carrying out his duties.
