LINAMON, Lanao del Norte — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱1 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation in Barangay Samburon, Linamon, Lanao del Norte, on Sunday morning, underscoring intensified efforts to curb the transport and distribution of undocumented products in the region.

According to police reports, the operation took place at approximately 7:15 a.m. when law enforcement personnel manning the checkpoint flagged down an Isuzu Elf truck carrying two male occupants for routine inspection.
During the inspection, authorities discovered more than 1,250 reams of assorted cigarette brands loaded inside the vehicle. The occupants reportedly failed to present the necessary documents and permits proving the legality and origin of the tobacco products, prompting authorities to seize the entire shipment.
The confiscated cigarettes were estimated to have a market value of around ₱1 million. The Isuzu Elf truck used to transport the suspected contraband was also impounded as part of the operation.
Authorities immediately conducted documentation and profiling procedures on the driver and his companion. Following the initial investigation, both individuals were released pending further verification and legal assessment. However, the seized cigarettes and the vehicle remain under government custody.
Officials said the confiscated items are scheduled to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further investigation into possible violations of customs and taxation laws.
Law enforcement agencies emphasized that the successful interception reflects the government’s continuing campaign against smuggling activities, which deprive the state of much-needed tax revenues and undermine legitimate businesses.
Authorities also reiterated their commitment to strengthening checkpoint operations across the region to prevent the entry, transport, and distribution of illegal and undocumented goods. They urged the public to cooperate with authorities and report suspicious activities that may be linked to smuggling and other illicit trade operations.
The seizure adds to a growing number of anti-smuggling operations conducted in Northern Mindanao as authorities intensify border control measures and crack down on the movement of contraband products through major transport routes.
