LINAMON, Lanao del Norte — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱1.4 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation in Barangay Samburon, Linamon, Lanao del Norte, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade of untaxed tobacco products in the region.

The operation led to the inspection of an Isuzu dropside truck, which was flagged down by law enforcement personnel at the checkpoint. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 35 master cases of Berlin cigarettes, equivalent to approximately 1,750 reams, concealed within the vehicle.

According to authorities, the confiscated cigarettes have an estimated market value of ₱1.4 million, making it one of the significant anti-smuggling interceptions recently recorded in the province.

The truck’s driver and passenger failed to present the necessary documents and permits to prove the legality of the shipment. Their inability to provide proper documentation raised suspicions that the cargo had been illegally transported and possibly intended for distribution in local markets without the payment of the required duties and taxes.

Following the seizure, law enforcement personnel conducted a complete inventory of the confiscated items in accordance with standard operating procedures. The driver and passenger were subsequently brought to the Linamon Municipal Police Station for documentation and further investigation.

Authorities said the seized truck and the suspected smuggled cigarettes are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and the filing of appropriate charges, if warranted.

The operation forms part of the government’s intensified campaign against smuggling activities, which continue to deprive the state of significant tax revenues and undermine legitimate businesses. Officials reiterated their commitment to strengthening border controls and checkpoint operations to prevent the entry and distribution of illicit goods across the country.

Investigators are also looking into the origin and intended destination of the shipment to determine whether larger smuggling networks may be involved in the transport of the confiscated cigarettes.

Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious transport activities as law enforcement agencies continue their crackdown on illegal trade and contraband in Northern Mindanao.
