Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱6 million worth of suspected illicit cigarettes during a joint law enforcement operation conducted early Tuesday morning, May 12, in the municipality of Baganga, Davao Oriental.

The operation led to the arrest of two male suspects, aged 42 and 33, both identified as drivers of two delivery vehicles loaded with assorted master cases of suspected illegal cigarette products.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the successful operation stemmed from ongoing surveillance and intelligence monitoring being conducted by police operatives in the area. Personnel from the Regional Special Operations Group 11, the Baganga Municipal Police Station, and other supporting units carried out the coordinated operation that resulted in the apprehension of the suspects and the confiscation of the contraband.

Authorities said the seized items were immediately marked and inventoried on-site in the presence of the arrested individuals in accordance with standard police procedures.

The suspects are currently under the custody of the Baganga Municipal Police Station while authorities prepare the appropriate charges and legal proceedings against them.

PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the operating units for what he described as a disciplined and well-coordinated operation against illegal trade activities.

“Patuloy nating paiigtingin ang operasyon laban sa mga ilegal na gawain na sumisira sa maayos na kalakalan at nakaaapekto sa seguridad ng ating mga komunidad. Ang mahalaga rito ay naisagawa ang operasyon nang maayos, may paggalang sa karapatan ng lahat, at sa tulong ng maayos na koordinasyon ng ating mga yunit,” the PNP chief said.

He added that the accomplishment reflects the continuing commitment of the PNP to strengthen law enforcement operations against illegal trade while maintaining professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights during police operations.

Authorities stressed that the proliferation of illicit cigarettes not only deprives the government of significant tax revenues but also fuels underground economic activities that undermine lawful businesses and public order.

The PNP assured the public that intensified police visibility, intelligence monitoring, and inter-unit coordination will continue nationwide as part of ongoing efforts to combat smuggling, illegal trade, and other unlawful activities threatening economic stability and community security.
