BUTUAN CITY — Tragedy struck a riverside community in Barangay Bit-os after two children drowned while swimming in a section of the Agusan River on the afternoon of April 24, authorities confirmed.

The victims, both young residents of the area, were reported missing at around 3:00 p.m. after they, along with a third companion, decided to go for a swim in the river. According to initial accounts, the children were merely playing and bathing in the water when the incident occurred.
A third child, a young girl who was with the victims, managed to survive and was able to alert authorities and residents about what happened. Her report prompted an immediate search and rescue operation conducted by local responders and concerned agencies.
After hours of search efforts, the bodies of the two missing children were eventually recovered from the river. Their identities have yet to be publicly disclosed as of this writing.
Police expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heartbreaking loss for the community. Authorities have coordinated with relevant agencies to ensure proper handling of the case and to provide assistance to the bereaved families.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reiterated its call for vigilance among parents and guardians, especially those living near rivers, creeks, and other hazardous areas.
“Parents are strongly urged to closely monitor their children at all times and avoid leaving them unattended near bodies of water,” the police said in a statement. “The safety of our children is a shared responsibility. Let us remain alert to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
The Agusan River, one of the largest rivers in Mindanao, is known for its strong currents, particularly during certain times of the year, posing significant risks to inexperienced swimmers.
Authorities continue to remind the public to exercise caution and prioritize safety, especially during recreational activities near open waters.
