TULUNAN, Cotabato — A couple was rushed to the hospital after being harassed and attacked during a violent hold-up attempt in Purok 3, Barangay New Caridad on the evening of April 13, 2026, prompting authorities to launch a large-scale manhunt against the suspects.

Initial police reports said two unidentified assailants, riding a black Bajaj motorcycle, carried out the crime at around 6:40 p.m. Witnesses noted that one of the suspects was believed to be a woman, adding a new layer of complexity to the investigation.

According to the victims’ account, the suspects approached their residence under the pretense of inquiring about drinks for sale. However, the situation quickly escalated when one of the suspects allegedly drew a firearm and threatened the female victim. In a desperate attempt to defend herself, she tried to grab the weapon, leading to a struggle.

Her cries for help alerted her husband, who rushed to assist, but both were attacked by the suspects, who reportedly used a stone to strike them on the head, causing injuries. Despite the assault, the suspects failed to immediately escape unharmed.

In a dramatic turn of events, the victims’ brother-in-law intervened and fought back, managing to strike one of the suspects with a bladed weapon, leaving the assailant wounded before the duo fled the scene.

The suspects were last seen heading toward Bitoan, passing through Banayal, with a possible escape route toward Barangay Palma Perez in the neighboring town of Mlang.

Police recovered several items believed to have been left behind by the suspects, including a light brown t-shirt, a black ball cap, and a pair of green slippers—potentially crucial pieces of evidence that may aid in their identification.

Following the incident, the injured couple was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is now reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities from the Tulunan Municipal Police Station, in coordination with the Mlang Municipal Police Station, swiftly initiated a hot pursuit operation. Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPAT) and Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members were also mobilized, with checkpoints activated in strategic areas across Barangays New Caridad and Palma Perez.

Police have also alerted hospitals and clinics in Mlang and Kidapawan City to report any individuals seeking treatment for injuries matching those sustained by one of the suspects.

Local officials issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to remain vigilant, secure their homes—especially at night—and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas.

As of this writing, authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the identities of the suspects and determine whether the attack is linked to other criminal activities in the area.

The incident has left residents shaken, underscoring growing concerns over security in the area as law enforcement intensifies efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
