BANSALAN, DAVAO DEL SUR — A simple plan to gather wild fern locally known as pako turned tragic after a father and son were killed in a motorcycle accident in Barangay Anonang, Bansalan town, shortly before 1:00 p.m. on January 10, 2026.

The victims were identified as Rondy Bonghanoy Bernales, 36, who was driving the Euro 150 motorcycle, and his father Henaro Lacao Bernales, 61. Both were farmers and residents of Sitio Disa, Barangay Anonang.

According to the Bansalan Municipal Police Station, the two were on their way to Bansalan Proper to gather pako when the accident occurred along a downhill portion of the road in Barangay Anonang.

Initial investigation revealed that the motorcycle’s brakes allegedly malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. The driver lost control, and the motorcycle slammed into a mango tree along the roadside.

Due to the strong impact, both the father and son were thrown off the motorcycle and sustained severe injuries. They were rushed for medical assistance but were declared dead on arrival.

Police authorities expressed condolences to the bereaved family and reminded motorists to always inspect their vehicles before traveling, especially when passing through steep or dangerous roads.

“Regular vehicle inspection is crucial to prevent mechanical failures that could lead to fatal accidents,” the police said, urging the public to prioritize road safety at all times.

The tragic incident has left the local community in mourning, as the victims were known as hardworking farmers who were only trying to earn a living.
