MALANGAS, Zamboanga Sibugay — Authorities have intensified their campaign against cigarette smuggling and the illegal trade of untaxed tobacco products in Zamboanga Sibugay, resulting in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of illicit cigarettes estimated to be worth ₱1.146 million in Malangas town.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the Provincial Intelligence Unit of the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office (ZSBPPO), in coordination with the Malangas Municipal Police Station and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Pagadian City Office. The operation was intelligence-driven and formed part of the province’s continuing efforts to disrupt the movement and distribution of smuggled tobacco products.
Authorities arrested an adult male suspect during the operation and confiscated 20 master cases of assorted illicit cigarettes. The seized shipment consisted of 10 master cases of U2 Full Flavour cigarettes and 10 master cases of Venus cigarettes, with a combined estimated market value of ₱1,146,000.
Police said the successful interception prevented the illicit tobacco products from being further distributed in Zamboanga Sibugay and potentially neighboring areas. The seizure also underscores the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to stop the circulation of cigarettes that allegedly bypass legal importation, taxation, and regulatory requirements.
The arrested suspect and confiscated cigarettes were brought to the Malangas Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition. The seized items are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for appropriate legal proceedings and further investigation.
ZSBPPO Provincial Director PCOL Barnard Danie V. Dasugo commended the personnel involved in the operation, particularly the police units and Bureau of Customs personnel whose coordination led to the successful interception.
“Ang matagumpay na operasyong ito ay patunay ng matatag na koordinasyon ng kapulisan, at Bureau of Customs sa ating patuloy na kampanya laban sa smuggling at iba pang iligal na gawain. Patuloy nating paiigtingin ang intelligence-driven operations upang mapigilan ang pagpasok at pamamahagi ng mga kontrabandong produkto sa ating lalawigan,” Dasugo said.
The provincial police office stressed that the campaign against illicit cigarettes goes beyond law enforcement. Authorities said the crackdown is also aimed at protecting government revenues, safeguarding legitimate businesses, and ensuring that tobacco products entering the market comply with existing laws and regulations.
Smuggling and the distribution of untaxed tobacco products can undermine legitimate businesses that comply with taxation and regulatory requirements while depriving the government of revenues that could otherwise support public services and development programs.
ZSBPPO said it will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, and inter-agency coordination to identify and disrupt smuggling networks operating in the province.
Police also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving the transport, storage, or distribution of suspected smuggled goods, saying community cooperation remains crucial in preventing illegal economic activities from taking root in local communities.
