Investigation underway to determine cause of death

ZAMBOANGA CITY — A 61-year-old woman was found lifeless along the riverbanks of Barangay Putik on Tuesday afternoon, raising alarm among residents and prompting an immediate police response.

The victim was identified as Mercelina Gonzaga, a resident of Barangay Lunzuran.

According to initial reports, concerned residents discovered a body floating near the river in Sitio Soto, Niño Village, Barangay Putik. Authorities were immediately notified, and responding units arrived to verify the situation. Medical responders were also called in to confirm the victim’s condition.

Police cordoned off the area and conducted an investigation to gather evidence and establish the circumstances that led to Gonzaga’s death. As of press time, law enforcers have yet to determine whether foul play was involved.

Authorities are also working to trace how the victim ended up in the river and whether she may have been swept downstream from another location.

The remains of Gonzaga have been taken for further examination as part of ongoing efforts to identify the cause of death.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities as the investigation continues.
