BUTUAN CITY — A morning trip meant to welcome a returning father turned into tragedy after a mother and her daughter were killed in a head-on collision along Barangay Sumilihon at around 6:58 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Police reports show that a blue Aluminum Wing Van and a Geely Coolray compact SUV bearing plate number ZAF 6224 collided head-on, leaving the SUV severely crushed. The SUV, driven by Vincent Mahomoc of Hayanggabon, Claver, Surigao del Norte, was reportedly on its way to Bancasi Airport to pick up the husband of one of his passengers.

Initial investigation revealed that Mahomoc admitted he briefly dozed off while driving, causing him to lose control of the SUV and swerve into the path of the wing van. The impact was so strong that the SUV ricocheted and hit a Toyota Fortuner with plate number ZAA 8828.

Medical personnel at the Butuan Medical Center confirmed that the mother and her young daughter, who were seated in front, died after being pinned against the crushed dashboard of the wrecked vehicle. Responders described the scene as “grievous,” with the front portion of the SUV almost completely deformed.

Authorities stressed that the fatal crash could have been prevented, warning that driver fatigue remains one of the leading yet most overlooked causes of road accidents.

A Strong Reminder to All Motorists

The Butuan City Police Office reiterated its call for motorists to strictly observe road safety measures, particularly avoiding driving while tired or drowsy. Even a momentary loss of alertness can result in irreversible tragedy, police said.

Officials also reminded the public to:

  • Get enough rest before long drives
  • Pull over immediately when feeling sleepy or distracted
  • Observe speed limits and maintain safe distances
  • Ensure passengers are properly seated and belted

As the holiday season increases travel volume, authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant, responsible, and conscious of their physical condition before getting behind the wheel.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
