COTABATO CITY — The lifeless body of a 22-year-old fisherman from Cotabato City was brought home to his family after he was reportedly shot dead while at sea off the waters of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat province, authorities confirmed.

The victim was identified as Mukthar Kari Ambo, a married resident of Mother Barangay Kalanganan, Cotabato City. According to initial reports, Ambo had been sailing for several days toward Kalamansig together with two other individuals, who were also fishermen and residents of the same barangay.

Investigators said Ambo sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, which is believed to have caused his immediate death. Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, including the motive and the identity of the assailant, as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal incident.

The victim’s remains have been returned to his family in Mother Barangay Kalanganan and are currently under their custody for immediate burial in accordance with Islamic tradition, which calls for prompt interment of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police Maritime Group has taken the two companions of the victim into temporary custody as part of its ongoing investigation. Police said the move is aimed at gathering crucial information that could help clarify the circumstances of the killing and identify those responsible.

Authorities assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, as they seek justice for the slain fisherman and answers for his grieving family.
