BASILAN PROVINCE — The Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) has seized a shipment of smuggled cigarettes worth over ₱27.7 million during a maritime security operation off the Amoyloi Reefs in Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan.

According to reports, personnel aboard a Philippine Navy vessel under Naval Task Force-61 spotted a suspicious motorized boat operating in the area. Upon interception and inspection, authorities discovered a large volume of contraband goods consisting of 484 master cases, 32 reams, and 129 packs of “Bravo Colorao” brand cigarettes.

The boat’s crew failed to present any documents proving the legality of their cargo or its origin. As a result, naval operatives confiscated the cigarettes and escorted the vessel to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for proper inventory and turnover to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for further investigation and disposition.

The WMNC said the successful interdiction highlights the Navy’s continuing efforts to curb smuggling and other illicit maritime activities in the Sulu Sea and nearby waters. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the country’s maritime borders from criminal syndicates that deprive the government of millions in potential revenue.

In a related statement, local officials lauded the Navy for its vigilance and dedication to maintaining maritime security, noting that illegal smuggling remains a persistent threat to both the economy and national security in the region.
