OZAMIZ CITY — The long-awaited modernization and expansion of Ozamiz City Airport is finally gaining momentum, marking a major step forward in Misamis Occidental’s infrastructure and economic growth.

Officials from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) personally visited the development site to conduct an inspection of the ₱1-billion Ozamiz Airport Modernization Project.

Leading the visit were Governor Henry S. Oaminal, Representative Ando Oaminal, and Mayor Sam Norman Go Fuentes, alongside DOTr Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Capt. Jim Sydiongco, CAAP Director General Raul Del Rosario, Deputy Director General Atty. Danjun Lucas, and Head Executive Assistant Capt. Benzar Bryan Balagtas. They were joined by Ozamiz Airport Manager Asher Ithamar Allunar and technical teams from the agencies.

The ₱1-billion modernization initiative—which began during Governor Oaminal’s term as congressman—includes the construction of a new passenger terminal building, the expansion and extension of the runway, and other key infrastructure components aimed at improving airport capacity and passenger experience.

The project funding includes:

  • ₱30 million for the continuation of apron concreting;
  • ₱285.30 million for the Ozamiz Airport Development Project (Phase 1);
  • ₱223.60 million for the new passenger terminal building (Phase 1);
  • ₱225 million for asphalt overlay of the runway; and
  • ₱230 million for shoulder grade correction (Phase 2).

One of the major challenges that delayed the full implementation since 2015 was the Road Right of Way (RROW) acquisition. However, this issue has now been resolved, allowing construction activities to proceed faster and more smoothly.

Governor Oaminal, Representative Ando Oaminal, and 2nd District Representative Indy Oaminal assured that the project will continue without interruption, backed by the full support of the CAAP and the Asenso Misamis Occidental Administration.

Mayor Sam Norman Go Fuentes emphasized that this development is not just an infrastructure upgrade, but a symbol of progress and unity for the people of Ozamiz.

“True development is not just talk. It’s about projects that people can see, feel, and benefit from,” said Mayor Fuentes.

Once completed, the modernized Ozamiz Airport is expected to strengthen connectivity, boost tourism, and open more economic opportunities across the province and Northern Mindanao.
