Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental — A man lost his life after reportedly jumping from the lighthouse area in Pahayahay, Port of Gingoog City, on Friday, October 3, 2025.

Authorities identified the victim as Avel D. Sanchez, a resident of Barangay 14, Gingoog City.

Initial police investigation suggests that depression may have played a role in the tragic incident. Investigators have so far found no signs of foul play surrounding Sanchez’s death, but further inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances.

Relatives and friends of the victim have expressed deep sorrow over his passing. In a social media post, a niece shared her grief and disbelief, saying her uncle had been close to her and her father, describing him as “a best friend and like a brother.”

This incident serves as a painful reminder of the growing mental health crisis affecting many Filipinos today. Authorities and mental health advocates continue to urge the public to look out for loved ones who may be silently struggling, to reach out, and to seek professional help when needed.
