OPOL, Misamis Oriental, Philippines — Police authorities in Misamis Oriental arrested a Filipino national and seized an estimated ₱768,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during an anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Taboc, Opol, on October 5.

The operation resulted in the recovery of 480 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes, which police intercepted from a vehicle believed to have been used to transport the illicit goods.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the vehicle was intercepted as police personnel carried out an anti-smuggling operation in the area. One Filipino was arrested in connection with the seizure.
The operation forms part of the PNP’s continuing efforts to suppress smuggling and other illicit activities through intelligence-driven and coordinated police operations. The seizure in Misamis Oriental was among the recent enforcement actions highlighted by the PNP under the leadership of Chief PNP PGen Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr.
The estimated value of the confiscated cigarettes, placed at approximately ₱768,000, underscores the scale of the shipment intercepted by authorities before the suspected illicit goods could proceed further into the local market.
The PNP said its operations are being carried out under its Focused Agenda, particularly the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) framework, which seeks to strengthen police capability in responding to identified threats through coordinated, intelligence-informed and accountable law enforcement.
PGen Nartatez emphasized that successful police operations should not be measured solely by the number of arrests or the monetary value of seized items. He stressed the importance of acting on reliable information, coordinating with partner agencies, securing evidence and ensuring that police procedures remain consistent with the law and the rights of persons involved.
“We act on information, we coordinate, and we do the job properly,” Nartatez said, stressing that addressing the problem, securing evidence and following the proper process are essential to maintaining public trust.
The arrested individual will face appropriate legal proceedings, while the confiscated cigarettes and the vehicle believed to have been used in transporting them will undergo the required examination, documentation and disposition in accordance with existing laws.
The Misamis Oriental operation highlights the continuing challenge posed by the movement of suspected smuggled tobacco products and the importance of sustained enforcement along transportation routes and other potential entry and distribution points.
The PNP said it will continue strengthening coordination among its operating units and partner agencies as part of its broader campaign against illegal activities and in support of its commitment to responsive and accountable public service.
