PIGCAWAYAN, COTABATO — More than a month after the brutal rape and killing of a two-year-old girl in Pigcawayan, Cotabato, justice remains elusive as police continue to pursue three persons of interest linked to the crime.
The child, identified as Kiara, was last seen inside the Buluan Daycare Center on August 19 before she went missing. Her lifeless body was later discovered in a nearby swimming pool. Initially believed to be a case of drowning, an autopsy revealed otherwise—showing that she died of asphyxia by smothering, with clear indications of sexual assault.
According to Pigcawayan Police Chief Major Mark John Mutlah, the daycare teacher failed to notice Kiara’s sudden disappearance because staff were preoccupied with a feeding program. Hours later, her body was found, sparking outrage and grief in the community.
Police have since identified three persons of interest and continue to track their possible involvement. In a recent meeting with barangay officials, authorities reaffirmed their commitment to resolve the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Barangay Chairman Ruben Marco issued a public appeal, urging those responsible for the heinous crime to surrender to authorities.
The case has shaken the community and reignited calls for stronger protection mechanisms for children, especially in public spaces such as daycare centers and schools where they are expected to be safe. Advocates and concerned citizens are pressing the government and local leaders to ensure tighter safeguards, stricter monitoring, and immediate interventions to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
As the investigation continues, Kiara’s family and supporters remain steadfast in their call: justice for a child whose life was cut short, and stronger protection for all children vulnerable to violence and abuse.
