San Pablo, Zamboanga del Sur — What was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon of coconut harvesting turned into tragedy after a farmer was fatally attacked by a swarm of bees in Barangay Miasin, Friday afternoon, September 26, 2025.

The victim was identified as Neceporo Dumalagan, a married resident of Purok 2. According to initial reports, Dumalagan was busy harvesting coconuts when strong winds dislodged a bee hive from a nearby tree. The disturbed bees immediately swarmed and repeatedly stung him.

Despite efforts to rescue and assist him, Dumalagan succumbed to multiple stings, leading to his untimely death. His sudden passing has plunged his family and the local community into mourning.

Authorities and barangay officials are now reminding residents, especially farmers and field workers, to exercise caution while working in areas where bee hives or other wildlife habitats may be present. They stressed that while bees play a crucial role in pollination and maintaining ecological balance, disturbing their colonies can trigger aggressive behavior that may turn fatal.

Health experts also advise the public not to be complacent. Even those outside the farming sector should remain alert in parks, backyards, or areas with thick vegetation where bees or wasps may have built nests. Simple precautions such as scanning surroundings before climbing trees, avoiding sudden movements near bee colonies, and seeking immediate medical help in case of stings can save lives.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder that respect for nature’s creatures — whether in farms, forests, or residential areas — is necessary to prevent avoidable tragedies.
