UPI, Maguindanao del Norte — Local officials and security forces gathered today, August 8, 2025, for the presentation of loose firearms under the Assistance for Security, Peace, Integration, and Recovery for Advancing Human Security in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ASPIRE) program, a government initiative aimed at curbing the proliferation of unlicensed weapons in communities.

The event was attended by Hon. Ma. Rona Cristina A. Piang-Flores, Member of Parliament Ramon A. Piang Sr., Lt. Col. Aeron T. Gumabao of the 57th “Masikap” Infantry Battalion, representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and barangay officials from across Upi.
Through the ASPIRE program, residents are encouraged to voluntarily surrender hidden or unregistered firearms to authorities in exchange for assistance and support, with the goal of preventing armed violence and fostering long-term peace.
“This initiative is not just about turning over weapons; it is about strengthening trust between the people and the government, and ensuring that our communities remain peaceful and secure,” said officials during the event.
The program is part of the broader peace and security campaign in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), where the government continues to pursue disarmament efforts as a means to maintain order and stability in the region.
Authorities expressed optimism that the surrender of loose firearms will contribute to lasting peace in Upi and serve as a model for other towns in the province.
