TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte (July 16, 2025) — A 24-year-old woman was shot dead inside her apartment in Purok 28-A, Kawayanan, Barangay Madaum, Tagum City in the early hours of Wednesday, marking yet another disturbing incident in a series of violent crimes reported in the area over recent weeks.
The victim, identified as Seannen “Shinen” Gellangarin, a 26-year-old online seller from Pag-asa, Seminary Drive, Magugpo West, was found lifeless with two gunshot wounds. Authorities confirmed she was still alive when the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) rescue team arrived but succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
Initial investigations by the Tagum City Police revealed that the suspect, believed to be a male acquaintance of the victim, forcibly entered her room after an intense argument reportedly sparked by jealousy.
“Naglalis pa sila, kay murag nagselos tong suspek. Gusto mosulod ug miingon, ‘patyon taka,’” a neighbor recounted. Witnesses also said the man kicked the door open before firing at the victim and fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
Police are now pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the gunman. The victim’s remains are currently at Rubio Memorial Services.
Pattern of Violence Raises Concerns
The killing of Gellangarin is not an isolated case. In recent weeks, several violent incidents — particularly involving women — have rocked Tagum City, sparking growing alarm among residents and local authorities.
Many now question the city’s public safety measures amid reports of killings, including one where another young woman was also gunned down in the same area under eerily similar circumstances.
Authorities have yet to confirm if these incidents are connected, but the proximity of the crime scenes and the repeated targeting of women have prompted calls for increased patrols, surveillance, and community engagement.
What’s Going On in Tagum?
Residents and community leaders are urging the Tagum City Police and local officials to act swiftly in addressing what seems to be a surge in violent crimes.
“Dili na ni usa ka isolated case. Unsa may rason nganong murag kada semana naay mamatay? Asa ang visibility sa kapulisan? Asa ang siguridad?” questioned one concerned resident who requested anonymity.
The recent spike in crime raises several pressing questions:
- Are these attacks targeted or random?
- Is there a deeper pattern that links the incidents?
- What concrete steps are being taken by law enforcement to restore peace and security in the city?
Police authorities have assured the public of ongoing investigations and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
As Tagum City reels from yet another tragedy, the community is left anxious and demanding answers — and action — to stem the tide of violence.
