TAGUM CITY — Panic and alarm gripped residents and motorists along Circumferential Road in Purok C-Suaybaguio, Barangay Magugpo North, Tagum City, after an elderly shop owner was shot by an unidentified customer in broad daylight on Friday afternoon, February 6, 2026.
The victim was identified as Buenaventura Perandos, legal age, self-employed, and a resident of Purok Kapatagan, 3rd Avenue, Barangay Magugpo South. He is the owner of a surplus and auto repair shop where the shooting took place.
According to initial reports from the Tagum City Police Office, the incident occurred shortly after 12:00 noon inside Dadong’s Welding and Surplus Shop, located along the busy circumferential road.
Witnesses said they heard a heated argument between the victim and an unidentified male customer moments before a gunshot rang out. The suspect reportedly visited the shop to inquire about a motorcycle shock absorber. However, an exchange of words allegedly followed, which suddenly escalated into violence.
Without warning, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and shot Perandos at close range, hitting him in the head. The assailant immediately fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Responding police officers and rescue personnel arrived shortly after the incident and found visible bloodstains on the ground where the victim had collapsed. Members of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) promptly transported Perandos to the Davao Regional Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.
As of this writing, the victim remains confined at the hospital, while his current medical condition has not yet been officially disclosed by authorities.
Police have cordoned off the crime scene and conducted a thorough investigation, including the collection of physical evidence and interviews with witnesses and nearby business owners. Authorities are also reviewing possible CCTV footage in the area to help identify the suspect.
The Tagum City Police Office said they are now working to determine the motive behind the attack, whether it stemmed from a personal dispute, misunderstanding, or other underlying issues.
Meanwhile, police have appealed to the public for cooperation, urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to come forward.
“This senseless act of violence has endangered not only the victim but also innocent bystanders in a busy public area,” police officials said in a statement. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice as soon as possible.”
The shooting has raised concerns among residents and business owners in the area, who are now calling for increased police visibility and security measures along the circumferential road to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities assured the public that intensified patrols and monitoring are being implemented as the investigation continues.
